In the run-up to the election, the North Korean media favoured Donald Trump to become the 45th President of the United States. Journalist Han Yong-muk wrote: “It turns out that Trump is not the rough-talking, screwy, ignorant candidate they say he is, but is actually a wise politician and a prescient presidential candidate” in a column for national newspaper DPRK Today.
Fast forward three months, and Donald Trump is two weeks into his presidency. Since his inauguration, many questions have been raised regarding Trump’s relationship with North Korea. In particular, many are concerned that his brash behaviour may result in Kim Jong-un making use of North Korea’s infamous nuclear deterrent.
Kim Jong-un used his New Year’s address to tell citizens that new nuclear weapons in Pyongyang are nearly ready for use. Speaking in a televised address, he stated: “Research and development of cutting edge arms equipment is actively progressing and ICBM rocket test launch preparation is in its last stage.”
Following Kim Jong-un’s update on North Korea’s nuclear missile programme, Donald Trump tweeted in response: “North Korea just stated that it is in the final stages of developing a nuclear weapon capable of reaching parts of the US. It won’t happen!”
