It’s safe to say that Lady Gaga’s Super Bowl performance was a career highlight for the pop star: an incredible display of vocal skills and choreography that wowed everyone watching at home. It was the kind of rendition that one of the biggest sports events on the planet deserves. There were synchronised drones, pyrotechnics and all manner of backing dancers. But the glue that held the whole intricate model together was the colossal personality of Lady Gaga herself.
An whopping 111.3 million people tuned in to watch Super Bowl LI when first broadcast, and even more people tuned in to see the performance after through online streaming.
As usual, Gaga (real name Stefani Joanne Angelina Germanotta) looked resplendent, garbed in a sequinned silver costume and boots, as she soared through the air on wires in front of a captivated audience. Unfortunately however, some viewers weren’t paying as much attention to her moves as they were to her stomach.
A great many took to Twitter to focus on the musician’s looks rather than her singing; and for once her haters weren’t focusing on her eccentric outfits but on her physique, stating that she should cover up her belly and accusing her of having put on weight.
“I just feel like #Gaga’s dough belly should’ve been tucked in better. #jussayin,” wrote one ab-obsessed Twitter user, while another commented. “Whoever designed Lady Gaga’s final outfit shouldn’t have let her expose her belly. It wasn’t flattering.” One critical individual even posted a picture of Pillsbury biscuits gushing out of their package. The Super Bowl was just the perfect opportunity for trolls and cyberbullies to indulge in a bout of body-shaming against a celebrity.
Tabloid newspapers and pundits from the hyper-critical world of fashion often make comments regarding the personal appearance of celebrities, and it seems that this occasion was no different. Luckily, Gaga’s devoted fanbase of self-described “monsters” were on call to defend their icon from the disparaging comments of trolls. Despite all this, Lady herself was pretty quiet on the matter of her detractors’ comments… until now.
