Russian Tattoo Artist Drugs Hairless Sphynx Cat Just To Give It A Tattoo

Tattoos are meant to be an artistic tribute to something which means a lot to you. For one tattoo artist, he decided to tattoo what meant the most to him on his cat, rather than himself. Unsurprisingly, this act has received numerous complaints from many animal rights activists.

The tattoo artist, known as Aleksandr, has tattooed various designs onto his Sphynx cat, after drugging it with sedatives. Aleksandr, who lives in Yekaterinburg, Russia, gave his cat, Demon, painkillers before tattooing ‘gangster’ designs on the poor animal.

Sphynx cats are unique, as they do not have any fur yet are not completely hairless. Additionally, Sphynx cats’ skin is incredibly sensitive, so tattooing them is incredibly risky. Aleksandr’s designs include a prison tower, a cigarette, vodka and a naked woman. These tattoos are common in Russian criminal gangs. Each tattoo depicts the status of the criminal within the gang, how long the criminal has served for his crimes and the severity of the crimes committed.

Speaking about his decision, Aleksandr stated that: “Of course I feel pity for doing it to him. It’s not like he wanted to do it himself. He has a different skin, so tattoos are applied differently. I hope it is not too bad for him, it is not his first tattoo. Usually he feels fine and recovers from the anaesthesia pretty fast”

Many animal activists are angry at Aleksandr’s actions. Animal rights activist Yelizaveta Skorynina stated that: “The drug turns off the movement of the cat, but the brain is still working. If he does it frequently, it could affect its heart.”

However, local tattooist Aleksandr Purtov defended the practice, claiming that it was no worse than a farmer branding his livestock: “It is an old practice, this is why I am neutral to it”. This does not justify the pain that the cat may have gone through, however. Lets hope that this cruel practice ends soon.
